Red eyes
Do you find your child's eyes becoming RED very often? Is your child complaining of eye problems?
Yes!!! These are the symptoms for a possible refractive error. If it is detected early then we can comfortably deal with all the future eye problems.
How to perform a simple eye test at home? Especially to find out refractive errors with children. They will never complain till the refractive error reaches a point of disturbance for them to really see through their eyes. If you find your child behaves a little differently especially while watching TV by reaching close to the screen then it is definitely facing refractive error in his or her eyes. As a parent we need to be responsible in noticing this behaviour and take action to deal with the future.
Eye Test - am going to share some details on the basic eye test. The following details will help you to check your eye sight even sitting at home. Especially children below 12 years.
Visual acuity test or eye test is to determine the smallest letters you can read on a standardized Snellens chart placed at a 6 meters distance or close to 20ft away.
In case you are downloading the Snellen's chart on your mobile then you may have to reduce the distance appropriately. Though this is not considered to be an accurate eye test, you can proceed to detect the basic eye problems.
Please look into the following tips
- Hold the chart little beyond your arm length distance and make the child sit comfortably.
- Ask him to close one eye and let his left hand cover the left eye. Ensure he doesn't press the eyeball while closing. Let the palm be in a cup shape.
- Let him start reading the chart, stop where he or she finds it difficult to read.
- Now ask the child to close the other eye and open the left eye to read the chart.
- Repeat this process for a few times and record the observation.
If he is reading the last line partially i.e. 50% and finds it difficult to read fully, then do not worry much. In case you find your child is fine reading the last but one line then absolutely fine. Nevertheless please keep an eye on his or her activity. If he is reading only 2 or 3 lines and complains of blurry vision.
Then need his eyes to be checked from a qualified ophthalmologist.
